We were pioneers in offering a high-resolution single sensor solution for creating VR content with the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens and the EOS R5 C camera. This head start allowed us to learn how people create VR content and develop a way to offer the best features of that initial lens at a more affordable price. At the same time, we addressed some challenges associated with compact 180º cameras by focusing on affordable APS-C sensor cameras and building the system around that. The result is a high-quality, feature-rich lens compatible with APS-C cameras, reasonably priced, and supported by updated VR software for an improved workflow. Canon Camera Connect and EOS Utility

For remote shooting, the Canon Camera Connect app and EOS Utility software offer features like the "Magic Window" overlay, left/right lens viewing swap, and fisheye to equirectangular preview. These tools make it easy to remotely monitor, view, and record content.

EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plug-in

Canon's subscription-based software solutions are an integral part of the EOS VR System and have been updated to support the new RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye lens. The EOS VR Utility, a standalone software application, and the EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro provide two distinct workflow experiences for VR creators and studios. Both solutions enable the conversion of Dual Fisheye lens imagery to stereoscopic 3D 180° VR format in equirectangular imagery, as well as processing and exporting the imagery at various resolutions and file formats. This allows files to be viewed on compatible head-mounted displays, such as the Meta Quest 2, and other VR viewing platforms.

144° Field of View and an Interpupillary Distance of 60mm

This lens is specifically designed to deliver exceptional stereoscopic 3D imagery. Featuring dual 3.9mm fisheye lenses with 60mm spacing between the left and right lens centers, it mimics the interpupillary distance of human vision, creating a natural parallax for a powerful, immersive experience. This setup makes viewers feel as though they are within the scene captured by the video or still image. With a 144° optical field of view, it allows viewers to change their viewing angle within the recorded scene, enabling them to look around using a compatible head-mounted display. The 144º field of view also offers distinct advantages in certain production situations, such as increased pixel density for higher resolution even in 4K Fine mode, and the ability to use tripods, gimbals, or microphones without them appearing in the shot.

Auto Focusing

The RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye lens is equipped with a gear-type stepping motor (STM) and a dual-lens autofocus mechanism that synchronizes the movement of the left and right lenses. This allows autofocus operation similar to standard RF lenses, with the added convenience of an electronic focusing/control ring. The focusing/control ring and the left-right focus difference adjustment mode switch enable adjustment of the left-right focus differential. Autofocus functions within the image circle of the left lens only, and servo AF is not supported. Prior to recording video, focus adjustment is necessary using One-shot AF or manual focus.

Impressive Reduction of Ghosting From Use of Air Sphere Coating (ASC)

Canon's ASC technology decreases ghosting and reflections that may occur, when shooting in more challenging lighting conditions such as during strong backlight, providing versatility and more uniform color balance in the scene.

Large Aperture of f/3.5 to a Deep Depth of Field of f/16

The RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye Lens features dual optical systems with electronically controlled apertures that offer a versatile aperture range. This allows you to adjust from a bright f/3.5 aperture for low-light shooting to a narrow depth of field at f/16 for greater exposure control in brighter environments. Additionally, it supports a 30.5mm screw-on filter at the rear of the lens and includes a gelatin filter holder, enabling the use of optional cut gel or polyester filters, similar to previous Canon ultra-wide-angle lens offerings.
